BANGOR - Norman P. Soucie, 86, passed away July 9, 2013, at home with his family at his side.

He leaves his wife of 66 years, Joan (Albert) Soucie; three daughters, Madeline Decker and husband, Jim, Mona Iwaszko and husband, Bob, and Sheila Boynton; and two sons, E. James Soucie and wife, Sue, and Keith Soucie and wife, Kathy. His legacy includes 13 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. He has one surviving brother, Malcolm.

He was born and raised on Soucie Hill, Route 11, Township 15 Range 6, Aroostook County, the son of Willie and Gertrude (Ouellette) Soucie. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran of World War II, where he earned several medals, including the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, American Campaign Medal, Philippine Island Liberation Medal, World War II Victory Medal, Good Conduct Medal and Infantry Man's Badge. After an honorable discharge, Dec. 1, 1944-Sept. 30, 1946, he returned to Maine, married Joan and started their family in Eagle Lake, then later moved to Milo for several years, and had been a resident of Bangor since 1967. Norm was a graduate of the University of Maine Orono, UMO, with Bachelor of Science degree and master's degree in education, and a CAS in education administration. He served as a teacher, principal, elementary supervisor, and superintendent of schools for a total of 24 years, and was also adjunct faculty at UMO for a few years. His devotion to education was recognized by his inclusion in Who's Who in Education as named by the National Association of School Administrators. He also received a Certificate of Achievement from the National Association of Secondary School Principals and is an honorary member of Phi Kappa Phi National Honor Society. He worked for the Maine Bureau of Veterans Services for four years and was the interim director for the last four months there, ending his career to go to Hawaii for an extended vacation. Norm was an avid and accomplished outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting and fishing immensely, especially with his grandchildren. He earned membership in the "Big Bucks in Maine" club numerous times. Norm was a dedicated golfer in his retirement prime, and scored three separate holes in one during his amateur career. He won the Northern Maine Senior Men's League Championship. He leaves a legacy of vision, tenacity, leadership, generosity and love that will endure forever. Among his proudest accomplishments was seeing all five of his children earn bachelor's degrees from the University of Maine, with most going on to earn master's degrees.
