PORTSMOUTH - Herman M. "Herm" Blanchette, 90, a lifelong resident of Portsmouth, died Friday, Nov. 9,
2012, at his home after a brief illness.
He was born in Portsmouth, Sept. 1, 1922, a son of the late Joseph M. and Priscilla (Bunker) Blanchette.
Herm graduated from Portsmouth High School and during World War II worked at the Portsmouth Naval
Shipyard. After the war, he started at the William E. Dennett Co. in downtown Portsmouth, where he
managed the store and retired with over 30 years of service. He then went to work for Portsmouth Paper in
sales until he retired in 1997 at the age of 75.
He was a communicant of Corpus Christi parish, attending St. James Church. He was a 62-year member
of the Portsmouth Lions Club, joining the club in 1950. He served the club as president in 1955 and as
secretary for 33 years. He served in various positions at the district level and held leadership positions in
special events held by the club and oftentimes as master of ceremony. He was presented with the Melvin Jones Fellow Award by
his club for outstanding leadership.
Herm was an avid golfer and in his earlier years enjoyed bowling. He will be remembered for his quick wit and sense of humor.
He shared 68 years of marriage with his wife, Theresa "Tes" (Soucy) Blanchette.
In addition to his wife, family members include two daughters, Sandra B. Fitz Gerald and her husband J. Timothy, of Hebron,
Conn., Gail M. Hudson and her husband Richard, of Dover, Del.; five grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; his brother, Robert
Blanchette of Ocala, Fla.; nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased in 2008 by his daughter, Sheila M. Berggren, and his sister, Jean Hughes.
