MERRIMAC — Richard D. Soucy, age 63, was unexpectedly stricken by a brain aneurysm Friday night, May 13, 2011, and passed away early Sunday morning, May 15, 2011, at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, where he was surrounded by his loving family.
He was the beloved son of the late Wilfred and Bertha Soucy; loving husband of Linda (Gariepy) Soucy; devoted father of Aaron Soucy of Merrimac, Michelle Barry and husband Rob of Merrimac and Laura Soucy of Virginia Beach, Va.; dearest brother of Sandra L. Gunter and husband Alfred of Aiken, S.C., and Wilfred L. "Bill" Soucy, Jr. and wife Sharon of Merrimac; proud grandfather of Bill, Matt and Bob Barry; Erik and Alyssa Chase and Ashton Trexler; and uncle to several nieces and nephews.
Richard, who was born on Jan. 12, 1948, at his parent's home on 30 Nichols St., Merrimac, lived in town for the vast majority of his life. A graduate of the Pentucket, Class of 1966, Dick excelled in football and baseball, and continued to play in the Northeast Baseball League into the mid 70s. No matter what he was doing, Richard had an eye for perfection in his work. He spent a decade working for the highway and water departments in Merrimac. In 1982, he began work at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard as a pipefitter. Although in the later years his work consisted of building maintenance, early on at PNS he worked on nuclear submarines, and always took great pride and care in the fact that people's lives depended on his work.
He was a benevolent man who, in addition to providing for his family, was always willing to give to those in need who he didn't know. In his 29 years at the shipyard, he gave more than six gallons of blood, donating every six weeks, which is as much as the Red Cross would allow. After Cystic Fibrosis took the son of a dear friend, he took money out of every paycheck for a number of years to show his support. He began donating to the Alzheimer's Foundation after the loss of his mother in 2006, and continued to do so up until the very end.
There is no doubt that Richard will be sorely missed. He always had a remarkably strong will, which may have gotten him into some trouble at times, but his intentions were always well placed. His strength carried his family through thick and thin, whether the hard times were emotional or financial. Although he may be gone from our sights, he will always live on in our hearts.
