Hello, again! I wrote you earlier to express gratitude for your site
solving a long family mystery for us. (i so enjoyed reading your history
and achievements...impressive and I'm sure fun and rewarding!)
You may be much to busy to answer individual requests...I'll certainly
understand. However, if you're feeling charitable today :~), perhaps you
could help me clear up some confusion.
Attached is the letter from a Clinton County, New York (Chazy)
researcher who finally helped us clear up what the name of our Lashua
family was in French.
We've had many other theories (Lajoie, Langevin, Gerin, etc. etc.) but
this one actually panned out and matched!!It's a thrilling night in the
warm sub-tropics! (Savannah, Ga..)
We have some Esther confusion. A couple of Kris's (attached letter)
records match mine but not yours. I have Etienne Lazure or Stephen
Lashua (as his gravestone says) married to Esther Nadeau, and Stephen
(Etienne number two) as their son and Marguerite as their daughter also.
I have Marguerite's husband as Isaac Richer...so do you and Kris. I have
Etienne's wife as Marie Nevert, roughly, as does Kris and as does her
gravestone, but you have a different surname.
My main confusion, though, as I indicated before I went all over the
place, is on Esther. I have Esther Nadeau as the mother of Stephen the
second (Etienne), Caroline, William, etc. from several sources.
Yet, although Kris shows Esther Nadeau as Marguerite and Stephen's
mother at these weddings, she also has a wedding showing an Esther
Fortier.
Can you help please possibly at all?
I'll be happy to help later if you want with what I have...I even know
who Esther Nadeau worked for, what property they owned, etc. :~)
Seriously, though, I do have a number of dates and places that might be
of use.
Thanks so very much! If you get to Savannah (according to Conde Nast
Traveller...one of the 10 best vacation destinations....three years in a
row...our nation's largest historic district would just take your breath
away....) our beach place is yours for a couple of nights if no one's in
it! :~) It's amazing how much family can't wait to see you once you get
a little beach condo.:~)

Etienne LAZURE s/o J.B. LAZURE & Marguerite LAFRAMBOISE and the widow of Sale SAREUR married Esther FORTIER
d/o Jacques FORTIER & Archange LAPLANTE 20 Feb 1849 at St. Joseph's in Coopersville
Some name variations & 'dit' names you might want to keep in mind are:
PAQUET= LAVALLEE
LAZURE=LAJEUNE=LAJEUNESSE=YOUNG
You may want to try writing to St. Joseph's (sorry I don't have an address) and see if they have any baptismal/burial information on
the above mentioned.

My name is Stuart Crowningshield Herrick..I live in Savannah Georgia but
all of my roots are in Upstate New York. My mother's family
(Crowningshield) is well documented for centuries. My paternal family is
a mystery that, at the age of 79, I would like to solve for my offspring
and theirs.
My father was born William Edward Lasua/Lashua (even Lashway).The
spellings vary and it seems to be common with the translations from the
French. (I'm told it was probably Lajoie originally...perhaps a dit
name.) The Herrick may throw you...my father's mother was divorced in
1896 and married a John Herrick...my dad started using that name.
I know that my dad's father, Edward Lashua, was born in Clinton County
in 1856. Either his father or grandfather...its not clear, was Stephen
Lashua (buried in Riverview) who came to Chazy with his wife Esther from
Canada in 1840. Stephen and Esther, I am told, had children including
Stephen, Edward, George, William (a civil war vet), Jennie and Caroline.
Son Stephen married Mary Neverett and they had three children..John,
Carrie (who married Edmund Dragoon of Champlain) and Edward. This Edward
I believe to be my grandfather.It seems he might have been married and
divorced in Clinton County before marrying my grandmother (Ida Louise
Bemis)and moving to Lowell, Mass.where my dad was born. My dad
seemingly had an older half-sister Grace Lashua...I've found her
mentioned on my grandparents' divorce decree.I found one born in
Parishville in 1881...could be she. (My family would never discuss any
of this...divorce being an embarrassment in the late 1800's)
As you know...getting info together is one thing and proving it another.
I have records of many of the above being buried in Riverview and Sacred
Heart.
It seems your specialty is marriages. If you can find any Clinton County
records of Lashua marriages I would be most eternally grateful! Warmest
