MONTREAL - Wealthy Montrealers are selling Mercedes-Benzes to buy cheaper Cadillacs in astonishing numbers, car dealer Gilles Soucisse says.

"We're very close to washed out of '88 Cadillacs," the sales manager at Avenue Pontiac Buick said Wednesday. "Yesterday I sold four and today another four or five. I can't keep up with demand."

Paul Darby, a forecaster with the Conference Board of Canada, said the trend could be an effort by investors to cover losses in the stock-market decline.

"It would surprise me if people were running out to buy Cadillacs with cash, but it wouldn't surprise me if they're selling their Porsches and Mercedes to buy Cadillacs."

Soucisse said: "I have a guy that came driving a three-year-old Mercedes. To replace it he has to spend $90,000, so he's going for a $45,000 Cadillac."
